At bulk enrollment stations, each student takes approximately 90 seconds: four finger captures (two primary, two backup) with quality verification. Running five enrollment stations simultaneously processes about 200 students per hour. For 8,000 students, enrollment takes roughly 40 hours of station time, typically completed across four to five days of registration week alongside ID card photography, document verification, fee payment, and hostel registration. Two staff members per station (one guiding the student, one monitoring capture quality) is sufficient. Re-enrollment for failed templates runs on demand throughout the semester.

Yes, but they operate in different modes. For daily attendance, the system runs in session-linked mode: a scan at a room entrance is matched to whichever class is scheduled there at that time. For exam hall verification, the system runs in exam mode: each student must scan before receiving their question paper, and the scan is linked to the specific exam record rather than a timetable session. Exam mode can require a higher verification confidence threshold and logs the seat number alongside the biometric confirmation. Both modes use the same enrolled biometric templates and the same hardware.

For fingerprint scanners, OpenEduCat supports hardware with capacitive liveness detection, which reads the electrical conductivity of living skin tissue. Silicone, gelatin, latex, and printed replicas do not conduct electricity the same way, so they are rejected at the sensor before the software ever processes a template match. For facial recognition, the system uses presentation attack prevention algorithms that detect flat images (printed photos or phone screens), video replays, 3D masks, and deepfake projections by analyzing texture, depth cues, reflection patterns, and micro-movements. All rejected attempts are logged with the reason code for security review.

The biometric attendance module runs inside the same platform instance as your student information system, timetable, gradebook, fee management, and every other OpenEduCat module. It shares the same database, the same server, the same backup schedule, the same user permissions, the same audit logging, and the same monitoring dashboards. The IT team does not need to maintain a separate biometric server, a separate database, or a separate integration layer. Scanner firmware updates and template storage are managed from the same administration interface. The only additional infrastructure is the physical scanners themselves and their network connections.

If all four enrolled prints consistently fail verification (which affects roughly 2-4% of the population due to conditions like eczema, hyperhidrosis, or naturally shallow ridges), the student is flagged for an alternative verification method. Options include facial recognition as a primary method instead of fingerprint, RFID card tap with a secondary PIN, or a faculty-confirmed manual check-in. The student's record notes the accommodation, and attendance reports do not penalize them for using an alternative method.
