French School Gradebook — 0–20 Scale with Mention Automatique

French schools grade on a 0–20 scale where 10/20 is pass, but the real complexity lies in coefficient-weighted moyennes and four Mention levels that carry legal weight on the Baccalauréat diploma. OpenEduCat stores notes natively on the 0–20 scale, applies subject coefficients automatically, assigns Mentions without manual lookup, and generates Bulletins de Notes in the format expected by Éducation nationale.

Grading Scales

Pre-configured grade bands shipped with the France module. No manual setup required.

GradePoints / RangeDescription
Très Bien≥16/20Highest mention. Appears on the Baccalauréat diploma as a formal distinction. A Philosophy student scoring 18/20 on a coefficient-8 Terminale L subject earns Très Bien mention.
Bien≥14/20High merit. Strongly positive for university admission and grandes écoles preparatory classes.
Assez Bien≥12/20Good. The most common mention band for Baccalauréat candidates.
Passable≥10/20Minimum for Baccalauréat eligibility. A student with coefficient-weighted moyenne of 10.0 receives the Bac with Mention Passable.
Insuffisant<10/20Failing. The student has not reached the Baccalauréat threshold and must attend the second session (oral rattrapage) if within the 8–9.9 band.

What the France Module Does

Country-specific features that go beyond the core gradebook engine.

1

Coefficient-Weighted Moyenne

Each subject carries an editable `fr_coeff` (default 1.0). The `fr_moyenne` is always coefficient-weighted — Philosophy at coeff 8 counts far more than an elective at coeff 1. No student moyenne can be computed without accounting for coefficients.

2

Mention Automatique

The `fr_mention` field assigns Très Bien/Bien/Assez Bien/Passable/Insuffisant automatically from the coefficient-weighted moyenne. Mention labels carry legal weight on the Baccalauréat — they must be exactly right.

3

2021 Baccalauréat Structure

Supports the reformed Bac with speciality subjects, grand oral component weighting, and continuous-assessment integration per Ministère de l'Éducation rules.

4

DNB Eligibility Check

Automatic Diplôme National du Brevet eligibility assessment for 3ème students based on continuous-assessment and exam components per Ministère rules.

5

Bulletin de Notes PDF

Official-style term report showing `fr_note`, `fr_coeff`, class average, teacher remarks, and `fr_mention` per subject — formatted for parent distribution at conseils de classe.

Re-Attempt Policy

Rattrapage (Second Session) — Baccalauréat

Candidates with a coefficient-weighted moyenne of 8–9.9 are admitted to the rattrapage oral examinations. If the oral session raises the moyenne to ≥10, the Bac is awarded with Mention Passable. The system tracks rattrapage eligibility automatically from the written session moyenne.

How re-attempts affect the transcript

  • The active grade (counted in GPA) is marked with an asterisk (*)
  • Superseded or excluded grades are annotated with their status code
  • All attempts appear on the transcript for full academic transparency
  • Cleared, condoned, compensated, and exempted backlogs do not block graduation

Transcript Formats

Official academic record formats generated by the France module.

Bulletin de Notes: Per-trimester note

coefficient, class moyenne, teacher remarks, and Mention — official format for conseils de classe and parent distribution.

Relevé de Notes Baccalauréat: Final diploma document with overall moyenne and Mention for official filing.

QR Verification Available

Install the secure bridge module to add QR codes with SHA-256 integrity hashes to every transcript. Employers and other institutions scan the code to verify the transcript is authentic and unmodified.

Honours & Classification

How graduates are classified under the France system.

ClassificationThreshold
Très BienCoefficient-weighted moyenne ≥ 16/20
BienMoyenne ≥ 14/20
Assez BienMoyenne ≥ 12/20
PassableMoyenne ≥ 10/20 — minimum Baccalauréat award

Regulatory Alignment

Ministère de l'Éducation nationale et de la Jeunesse, Baccalauréat général et technologique (réforme 2021), DNB assessment rules

The France gradebook module pre-configures grading scales, assessment templates, re-attempt policies, and transcript formats to align with the requirements set by Ministère de l'Éducation nationale et de la Jeunesse, Baccalauréat général et technologique (réforme 2021), DNB assessment rules. The data structures, computation rules, and report formats follow the standards your accreditation body expects to see during institutional audits.

Grade distributions, pass rates, GPA trends, and classification statistics can all be exported to Excel for submission during accreditation reviews. The structured data makes it straightforward to pull the specific metrics your accreditation criteria require.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the France gradebook module.

Each subject has a `fr_coeff` (default 1.0). Philosophy might have coefficient 8 for a Terminale L student while Mathematics has coefficient 5 — giving Philosophy more weight in the overall moyenne. The coefficient is editable per school and grade level configuration.
