The attendance percentage formula is straightforward: divide the number of classes you attended by the total number of classes held, then multiply by 100. That gives you a single number that tells you whether you are meeting your institution's minimum requirement.

The Formula

For example, if your professor held 48 lectures this semester and you attended 40, your attendance is (40 / 48) × 100 = 83.33%. If the minimum requirement is 75%, you are in good shape with about 8 percentage points of buffer.

Why Attendance Matters More Than You Think

At most universities, falling below the minimum attendance threshold means you are not eligible to sit for final exams. It does not matter if you know the material inside out, if your attendance is 73% and the cutoff is 75%, you are barred from the exam hall. Some institutions have an even stricter policy: they deregister you from the course entirely, meaning you have to repeat it next semester.

Beyond the rules, there is a practical reason to show up. Studies from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that each additional class attended correlates with a 1.5% improvement in final exam scores. Students who attend over 90% of classes consistently outperform those who hover around the minimum.

Common Attendance Thresholds by Country

• India (UGC guidelines): 75% mandatory. Some colleges set it at 85% for professional courses like engineering and medicine.
• United States: Varies by institution. Many colleges track attendance but set their own policies. Federal financial aid regulations require schools to verify attendance.
• United Kingdom: Tier 4 visa students must maintain attendance records. Most universities expect 80% or higher.
• Australia: International students on student visas must maintain 80% attendance under ESOS regulations.

Calculating Forward: Planning the Rest of Your Semester

Knowing your current percentage is only half the picture. The more useful question is: "How many more classes do I need to attend?" or "How many can I still skip?" That is what the second and third tabs in this calculator do.

Say you have attended 28 out of 40 classes so far (70%), and there are 20 classes left. To reach 75% of the total 60 classes, you need at least 45 total attended. Since you already have 28, you need 17 out of the remaining 20, meaning you can only skip 3 more.
