LTI & SCORM Integration

Free & EnterpriseLearning Standards

Connect external learning tools and import SCORM courseware into your LMS

Overview

Extend OpenEduCat's learning management capabilities by integrating with industry-standard e-learning protocols. LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) 1.3 connects external tools like simulations, lab environments, and publisher content directly into your courses. SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 support lets you import packaged courseware from any SCORM-compliant authoring tool. xAPI (Experience API) tracks learning activities across multiple platforms and aggregates them in OpenEduCat for comprehensive learner analytics.

Key Capabilities

LTI 1.3 Tool Integration

Connect external learning tools as LTI providers. Students launch tools directly from OpenEduCat and grades pass back automatically to the gradebook.

SCORM 1.2 Content Import

Upload SCORM 1.2 packages created in Articulate, Adobe Captivate, or other authoring tools. Content plays within OpenEduCat and tracks completion and scores.

SCORM 2004 Support

Support for SCORM 2004 sequencing and navigation. Complex multi-chapter courses with prerequisites and branching paths work out of the box.

xAPI Learning Records

Collect xAPI statements from external learning activities. Build comprehensive learner profiles that include data from simulations, mobile apps, and real-world training.

Grade Passback

Scores from LTI tools and SCORM modules automatically update the OpenEduCat gradebook. Faculty see all grades in one place regardless of where the learning happened.

Content Library Management

Maintain a central library of SCORM packages and LTI tool configurations. Assign content to courses with drag-and-drop simplicity.

Setup Guide

1

Identify Content Sources

Determine which external tools you want to connect via LTI and which SCORM packages you need to import. Verify that tools support LTI 1.3 and packages are SCORM 1.2 or 2004 compliant.

2

Install LMS Extensions Module

In OpenEduCat Settings > LMS, install the Learning Standards module which adds LTI, SCORM, and xAPI capabilities to the built-in LMS.

3

Configure LTI Connections

For each LTI tool, register OpenEduCat as a platform. Exchange the platform ID, deployment ID, and public keyset URL with the tool provider.

4

Upload SCORM Packages

Navigate to Course Content > Import and upload your SCORM ZIP packages. OpenEduCat extracts the manifest and creates playable learning objects.

5

Assign Content to Courses

Add LTI tools and SCORM modules as activities within course syllabi. Configure completion criteria, grading weights, and availability dates.

Use Cases

  • Universities licensing publisher content (McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Cengage) that needs to launch from the institutional LMS via LTI
  • Corporate training departments with existing SCORM libraries migrating to OpenEduCat for education management
  • Institutions using specialized simulation software (virtual labs, language learning) that connects via LTI
  • Programs requiring detailed learning analytics from multiple platforms aggregated through xAPI

Technical Requirements

  • OpenEduCat 4.0 or later
  • LTI 1.3 compliant tools for LTI integration
  • SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 compliant content packages
  • xAPI compatible Learning Record Store (built into OpenEduCat Enterprise)
  • Modern web browser with JavaScript enabled for SCORM content playback

Frequently Asked Questions

LTI connects live external tools (like a virtual lab or publisher platform) to your LMS. The content lives on the tool provider's server. SCORM is a packaging standard for self-contained courseware (like an interactive lesson) that you upload and host on your own LMS. Both can pass grades back to OpenEduCat.
