How to Calculate Your GPA
GPA puts all your grades on one scale so schools can compare apples to apples. In the US, that scale goes from 0.0 to 4.0. Each letter grade maps to a number, and the math is actually pretty straightforward.
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Convert grades to numbers: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Check the table below for plus/minus grades like B+ or A-.
- Multiply by credits: Got a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course? That's 3.3 Ă 4 = 13.2 quality points. Do this for each class.
- Add them up: Total all the quality points from the semester.
- Divide by total credits: Total quality points divided by total credit hours = your semester GPA.
Cumulative GPA
Same formula, but you include every semester. If you already know your cumulative GPA and total credits from previous semesters, enter those here and add your new courses. The calculator figures out your updated cumulative GPA. Handy for checking if you're on track for graduation or scholarship cutoffs.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
High schools use weighted GPAs to give credit for harder classes. Honors courses add 0.5 points (so an A is 4.5). AP and IB add a full point (A = 5.0). That's why some students have GPAs above 4.0. Colleges mostly look at unweighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale.
