What Is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a number that represents your overall academic performance across all subjects or semesters, expressed on a standardized scale (usually 10 points in India).
Unlike a simple percentage, CGPA uses grade points, fixed numeric values assigned to letter grades, which makes it easier to compare performance across different subjects and examination boards.
Whether you are a CBSE Class 10 student checking your board results or a university student tracking your semester grades, the basic principle behind CGPA is the same: average your grade points.
Method 1: CBSE CGPA Calculation (Classes 9 and 10)
This is the simplest form of CGPA calculation and the one most Indian students encounter first.
The Steps
Step 1: Write down your grade points for each of your 5 main subjects (exclude the 6th additional subject).
Step 2: Add up all the grade points.
Step 3: Divide the total by 5 (the number of main subjects).
Worked Example
Rahul scored the following in his Class 10 CBSE board exams:

Converting to Percentage
To convert CBSE CGPA to an approximate percentage:
Percentage = CGPA x 9.5
Rahul's percentage: 8.6 x 9.5 = 81.7%
This is the official CBSE-approved conversion formula. Most Indian universities and employers accept this conversion.
Method 2: University Semester CGPA
At the university level, CGPA calculation becomes more involved because courses carry different credit values (also called credit hours or credit units). A 4-credit course influences your CGPA more than a 2-credit course.
The Steps
Step 1: For each course, note the grade point earned and the number of credits.
Step 2: Multiply each grade point by the corresponding credits to get credit points (also called quality points or weighted grade points).
Step 3: Add up all the credit points.
Step 4: Add up all the credits.
Step 5: Divide total credit points by total credits.
Worked Example: Single Semester (SGPA)
Priya completed the following courses in Semester 3:

Total credit points: 32 + 28 + 27 + 16 + 20 + 7 = 130
Total credits: 4 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 16
SGPA = 130 / 16 = 8.125
Priya's SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) for this semester is 8.13 (rounded to two decimal places).
Method 3: Cumulative CGPA Across Multiple Semesters
Once you have SGPA for individual semesters, you calculate the overall CGPA by combining the data from all semesters.
The Steps
Step 1: For each semester, note the SGPA and the total credits for that semester.
Step 2: Multiply each SGPA by its total credits.
Step 3: Add up all the results.
Step 4: Divide by the total credits across all semesters.
Worked Example
Priya has completed 4 semesters:

Total: 135.0 + 160.0 + 130.08 + 153.0 = 578.08
Total credits: 18 + 20 + 16 + 18 = 72
CGPA = 578.08 / 72 = 8.03

CGPA to Percentage Conversion for Universities
Different universities use different conversion formulas. Here are the most common ones:
CBSE Formula **Percentage = CGPA x 9.5**
This works for the CBSE 10-point scale.
Mumbai University Formula **Percentage = (CGPA - 0.5) x 10**
Example: CGPA of 8.03 gives (8.03 - 0.5) x 10 = 75.3%
Anna University / VTU **Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10**
Example: CGPA of 8.03 gives (8.03 - 0.75) x 10 = 72.8%
Generic Formula (When University Does Not Specify) **Percentage = (CGPA / Maximum CGPA) x 100**
For a 10-point scale: (8.03 / 10) x 100 = 80.3%
Always check your university's official formula. Using the wrong conversion can lead to incorrect percentage values on your resume or job applications.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Including the Additional Subject in CBSE CGPA CBSE CGPA uses only 5 main subjects. The 6th additional subject is excluded from the calculation. Including it will give you an incorrect CGPA.
2. Ignoring Credit Weights at University Level At the university level, you cannot simply average grade points without considering credits. A grade of A in a 4-credit course matters more than an A in a 1-credit course.
3. Using the Wrong Conversion Formula The CBSE formula (CGPA x 9.5) does not apply to all universities. VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and others each have their own formula. Check your institution's official guidelines.
4. Confusing SGPA with CGPA SGPA is for a single semester. CGPA is cumulative across all semesters. When someone asks for your CGPA, they want the overall number, not just the latest semester.
5. Rounding Too Early When calculating multi-semester CGPA, carry decimal places through the intermediate steps and only round the final result. Rounding after each semester introduces cumulative error.
