Swiss University Honours and Distinction

Cum Laude, Federal Diploma Distinction, and ETH Zürich Honours

Swiss academic distinction — awarded as Ausgezeichnet (German), Avec distinction (French), or Con lode (Italian) — requires a subject average of ≥5.5 on the 1–6 scale with no individual grade below 4.0. At ETH Zürich, one of the world's leading technical universities, the same threshold applies to bachelor's and master's distinctions. OpenEduCat evaluates Swiss honours conditions automatically and generates the appropriate Diploma Supplement notation for international recognition.

Swiss Academic Honours Levels

From Ausgezeichnet (highest distinction) through the standard Matura pass to the ETHZ institutional distinction criteria.

Ausgezeichnet / Distinction

Average Threshold

≥ 5.3–5.5 average (canton/institution sets exact value)

Grade Floor Requirement

No grade below 4.0 in any subject

Diploma Notation

Noted on Matura certificate and Diploma Supplement

Applicable To

Gymnasium Matura, university bachelor's and master's

The exact threshold for Ausgezeichnet distinction varies by canton. Most require ≥5.5 average; some accept ≥5.3. The Matura commission sets the cantonal threshold.

Bestanden / Passé / Superato (Standard Pass)

Average Threshold

≥ 4.0 average AND no more than one subject below 4.0

Grade Floor Requirement

Maximum one deficient subject (below 4.0)

Diploma Notation

Standard Matura pass notation

Applicable To

Gymnasium Matura, Berufsmatura, Fachmatura

The dual-criterion rule is strict: both the average AND the deficient subject count must be met simultaneously. One criterion failing blocks Matura even if the other is satisfied.

Nicht bestanden (Matura Not Awarded)

Average Threshold

Average < 4.0 OR ≥ two subjects below 4.0

Grade Floor Requirement

Two or more deficient subjects block Matura

Diploma Notation

Matura not awarded; Ergänzungsprüfung may be offered

Applicable To

Gymnasium Matura failure

Students with exactly one deficient subject may be offered an Ergänzungsprüfung (supplementary exam) in that subject. Canton determines eligibility and deadline.

ETHZ Distinction (Auszeichnung)

Average Threshold

Average ≥ 5.5 across all semester grades; no grade below 4.0

Grade Floor Requirement

No failures in any semester course

Diploma Notation

ETH Zürich academic distinction noted on Abschlusszeugnis

Applicable To

ETH Zürich bachelor's and master's programmes

ETH Zürich has its own distinction criteria which are among the most demanding in Swiss higher education. The average requirement reflects ETH's rigorous grading culture.

How OpenEduCat Evaluates Swiss Honours Automatically

1

Dual-Criterion Distinction Check

OpenEduCat evaluates both the programme average (≥5.5 or cantonal threshold) AND the individual grade floor (no grade below 4.0) simultaneously. Students who meet both conditions are flagged for Ausgezeichnet consideration. Partial qualification — for example, meeting the average but having one subject below 4.0 — is flagged separately.

2

Four-Language Diploma Supplement

The Swiss Diploma Supplement is generated in the student's cantonal language: Zeugnis (German), Bulletin scolaire (French), Pagella (Italian), or Testimoni (Romansh). The Ausgezeichnet / Avec distinction / Con lode notation is included in the appropriate language, along with the scale explanation (6=best) and ECTS equivalents.

3

Ergänzungsprüfung Outcome Handling

When a student sits a supplementary exam, the result is stored against the original subject with a flag. If the supplementary exam passes, Matura eligibility is recalculated automatically. The distinction evaluation is re-run — since the supplementary exam typically produces a borderline pass grade, Ausgezeichnet is generally not awarded after a supplementary exam path.

4

Cantonal Threshold Configuration

The distinction threshold (5.3 vs 5.5 vs other) is configurable per campus to match the canton's Matura regulation. OpenEduCat supports different threshold configurations for German-Swiss, French-Swiss, and Italian-Swiss campuses within the same installation, ensuring correct evaluation regardless of which canton the student is enrolled in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Swiss university honours and academic distinction.

Swiss universities use the term "Ausgezeichnet" (outstanding) or "Avec distinction / Con lode" for academic honours. The typical threshold is a subject average of ≥5.5 on the 1–6 scale, with no individual grade below 4.0. Some cantons and institutions accept ≥5.3 as the honours threshold. At ETH Zürich, the standard is ≥5.5 average with no failures. OpenEduCat evaluates both the average and the individual grade floor simultaneously when determining distinction eligibility.
