South Africa NSC Supplementary Exam Policy — DBE Rules

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) provides NSC supplementary examinations for Grade 12 students who achieved Rating Code 3 (40-49%) or Code 4 (50-59%) in up to two subjects. Supplementary exams are held in February-March, approximately three months after the November main examination. A successful supplementary result replaces the original mark, can change the certificate endorsement from Diploma to Bachelor's Pass, and triggers a recalculation of the student's APS.

Supplementary Exam Eligibility Rules

DBE rules governing who may sit NSC supplementary examinations and in how many subjects.

1

Rating Code Threshold

Students who achieve Code 3 (40-49%) or Code 4 (50-59%) in a subject qualify for a supplementary examination in that subject. Students scoring Code 2 (30-39%) or below do not qualify for supplementary and must repeat the full Grade 12 year.

2

Maximum Number of Subjects

A student may sit supplementary examinations in a maximum of two subjects per sitting period. Candidates who need to improve more than two subjects must wait for the next full NSC examination cycle.

3

Pass Status Requirement

The student must have passed the NSC (met the minimum subject requirements for at least a Higher Certificate pass) to be eligible for supplementary exams in specific subjects. Students who did not pass the NSC overall are referred to the full supplementary cycle or Grade 12 repeat.

4

Previous Year Candidates

Students who sat the NSC in a previous year and wish to improve specific subject results may also sit as returning candidates (referred to as "pre-2008" or "senior certificate" candidates in older cohorts). Current Grade 12 candidates sit the same supplementary examination period.

How OpenEduCat Recalculates After Supplementary Results

When supplementary results are imported into OpenEduCat, the system recalculates the promotion mark using the original 25% SBA component and the new supplementary exam result at 75%. The new promotion mark is mapped to a rating code, the APS is recomputed, and the Bachelor's/Diploma/Higher Certificate pass matrix is re-evaluated. If the student's certificate endorsement changes (for example, moving from Diploma to Bachelor's Pass), the system flags this for the registrar and generates an updated NSC statement of results automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about NSC supplementary examinations and DBE eligibility rules.

A student qualifies for an NSC supplementary examination in a specific subject if they achieved Rating Code 3 (40-49%) or Code 4 (50-59%) in that subject in the main November examination. Students may apply for supplementary exams in a maximum of two subjects per cycle. Students who scored Code 2 (30-39%) or below do not qualify and must either repeat Grade 12 or wait for the next main examination period. The student must also have met the overall NSC minimum pass requirements.
