South Africa Matric Distinction and NSC APS Score

South Africa's NSC awards distinctions at two levels: individual subject distinctions (Code 7, ≥80%) and the overall “Passed with Distinction” endorsement on the matric certificate (average ≥80% across best six subjects, no subject below Code 6). Universities use the Admission Points Score (APS) — the sum of rating codes from the best six non-Life Orientation subjects — to determine programme eligibility. This page explains how distinctions work, how APS is calculated, and how OpenEduCat automates both.

NSC Distinction Requirements

Distinctions operate at two levels: per-subject (Code 7) and overall certificate.

Subject Distinction

Threshold
Rating Code 7 in a subject (≥80%)
How it appears on documents
Distinction annotation next to the subject on the NSC Statement of Results

A student can earn distinctions in individual subjects without the overall certificate distinction. Each Code 7 subject is annotated separately.

Matric Certificate with Distinction (Passed with Distinction)

Threshold
Average of all six best non-LO subjects ≥80%, with no subject below Code 6 (70%)
How it appears on documents
"Passed with Distinction" appears on the NSC Certificate

The most prestigious matric outcome. Reported widely in school performance data and used in national scholarship applications.

Bachelor's Pass (standard)

Threshold
Subject minimums met per DBE Bachelor's pass matrix — does not require Code 7
How it appears on documents
NSC Certificate endorsed "Bachelor's Pass"

The entry-level university qualification. Most students who qualify for a Bachelor's Pass do not earn the Distinction endorsement.

APS Calculation — Worked Example

APS sums rating codes from the best six non-LO subjects. Life Orientation is always excluded from this calculation.

Subject%Rating CodeAPS Points
Mathematics85%77
Physical Sciences78%66
English Home Language72%66
History65%55
Geography58%44
Accounting52%44
Total APS (6 subjects)68% avg32

In this example, the student earns APS 32. With an average of 68% across the six subjects and Mathematics at Code 7, this student has subject distinctions in Mathematics but does not reach the 80% average needed for the overall “Passed with Distinction” endorsement. The APS of 32 qualifies for most Bachelor's degree programmes, though the most competitive programmes (medicine, actuarial science) may require APS 36+.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about NSC distinctions and the Admission Points Score.

A South African matric student is awarded "Passed with Distinction" when their average across the best six non-Life Orientation subjects is 80% or above, and no individual subject falls below Code 6 (70%). This is the highest overall NSC achievement designation and is printed on the matric certificate. It is distinct from earning Code 7 in individual subjects — a student can earn subject distinctions without achieving the overall Passed with Distinction endorsement.
