Nordic University ECTS Grading
Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland within the Bologna Framework
All four Nordic countries participate in the Bologna Process and align with ECTS, but each uses a distinct national grading scale. Sweden and Norway use A–F letters, Denmark uses a unique 7-step numerical scale (the only system in the world with a negative grade), and Finland uses 0–5 numerals. OpenEduCat handles all four with a single nordic_country selector and maps each to ECTS equivalents for international credit transfer.
National Scale to ECTS Mapping: All Four Countries
Each Nordic country uses a different notation while remaining Bologna-compatible. The table below shows how national grades map to ECTS equivalents.
| Country | National Scale | Pass Threshold | ECTS Mapping | Certificate | Regulator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sweden | A–F | E (minimum pass) | A→A, B→B, C→C, D→D, E→E, F→FX/F | Betyg | Skolverket |
| Norway | A–F | E (minimum pass) | A→A, B→B, C→C, D→D, E→E, F→F | Vitnemål | Utdanningsdirektoratet (LK20) |
| Denmark | 12 / 10 / 7 / 4 / 02 / 00 / -3 | 02 (minimum pass) | 12→A, 10→B, 7→C, 4→D, 02→E, 00→Fx, -3→F | Eksamensprøve | Undervisningsministeriet (BEK nr 114) |
| Finland | 0–5 | 1 (HE context; configurable) | 5→A, 4→B, 3→C, 2→D, 1→E, 0→F | Todistus | Opetushallitus (Lukiolaki) |

Key Differences by Country
Each Nordic system has distinct characteristics that affect how OpenEduCat configures grading logic per campus.
Sweden — A–F Scale
Streck (—) for unassessed subjects. Used in both secondary and HE contexts.
Norway — A–F Scale
Nearly identical to ECTS letter scale. F is an explicit fail, not recorded on the Vitnemål.
Denmark — 12 / 10 / 7 / 4 / 02 / 00 / -3 Scale
Unique 7-step scale. Skips grades 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11. -3 is the only negative grade in any national system.
Finland — 0–5 Scale
Universities may use 0–5 or a modified scale per programme. Grade 5 = Erinomainen (Excellent).
How OpenEduCat Manages Nordic ECTS Credit Systems
A single installation handles all four country configurations without separate deployments.
Four-Country Grading Selector
The `nordic_country` field (se / no / dk / fi) activates the correct national grading scale, pass threshold, ECTS mapping table, and certificate template per campus or student cohort. A university group with campuses in Stockholm and Oslo uses one installation for both.
ECTS Credit Accumulation Tracking
OpenEduCat tracks cumulative ECTS credits per student toward degree completion. Programme completion thresholds (180 ECTS for bachelor's in most Nordic countries) are configured at the programme level. Students and advisors see real-time credit progress.
Diploma Supplement Generation
The Diploma Supplement — the standard Bologna document required for international academic mobility — is generated automatically. It includes the national grade, ECTS equivalent, credit weighting, and programme-level qualification description for each completed course.
Denmark -3 Grade Handling
The Danish -3 grade requires special handling: it must sort below 00, display as "-3" on transcripts, and map to ECTS F in the Diploma Supplement. OpenEduCat implements this as a distinct grade code, not a numeric field, ensuring correct behaviour throughout all system outputs.
