Nigeria University Transcript

A Nigerian university transcript follows NUC (National Universities Commission) guidelines, recording course codes, credit units, grade letters, and cumulative CGPA on the 5.0 scale for every semester. The final class of degree is printed at graduation. Transcripts are essential for NYSC call-up letter processing, NUC portal verification, and international evaluation through WES and IQAS.

What Goes on a Nigerian University Transcript

Four sections that together constitute a NUC-compliant academic record.

Student identification

  • Full legal name
  • Matriculation number
  • JAMB registration number (where applicable)
  • Programme and department
  • Faculty and institution name
  • Year of entry and year of graduation

Per-semester academic record

  • Course code and full title
  • Credit units assigned to course
  • Grade letter (A, B, C, D, E, F)
  • Grade points earned
  • CGPA per semester (cumulative from Semester 1)
  • Total credit units attempted and passed per semester

Final academic performance

  • Final CGPA on the 5.0 scale
  • Class of degree (First Class, Second Class Upper, Second Class Lower, Third Class, Pass)
  • Total credit units completed for the programme
  • Overal academic standing
  • Date degree conferred or expected date of graduation

Institutional authentication

  • Registrar signature and official university stamp
  • Date of issue and transcript reference number
  • Security paper with watermark (for paper transcripts)
  • NUC accreditation status note (where printed)

Transcript and NYSC Call-Up Requirements

The NYSC call-up process links directly to the academic transcript. These are the three transcript-related requirements every graduate must understand.

Provisional vs final transcript

A provisional transcript is issued before convocation for students who have completed all coursework but have not yet been conferred their degree. NYSC accepts provisional transcripts for call-up letter processing. A final transcript is issued after the convocation ceremony and carries the full class of degree notation. Both must be on official university letterhead with the registrar stamp.

NYSC call-up letter and transcript link

The NYSC portal requires graduates to upload a transcript or statement of results when applying for the call-up letter. The document must show the class of degree or expected class, the degree programme, and the university name. NYSC cross-references this with NUC records. Transcripts from non-NUC-accredited institutions are rejected.

Exemption certificate instead of call-up

Graduates who are 30 years or older at the time of graduation, or whose programme was below minimum NUC standards, may apply for an NYSC exemption certificate instead of a call-up letter. A final transcript demonstrating the age of the degree or the programme type is required for the exemption application.

NUC Verification and Degree Authentication

Three pathways for verifying a Nigerian university degree.

NUC verification portal

The National Universities Commission (NUC) operates an online credential verification portal (nucportal.gov.ng). Employers, graduate schools, and immigration authorities submit the graduate's name, university, programme, and graduation year. The NUC returns a confirmation of whether the degree was awarded by an accredited programme.

In-person verification at institutions

For high-stakes recruitment (federal civil service, NNPC, military), transcript verification is done directly with the university registrar. The employer or government agency sends a verification letter to the institution. The registrar confirms the record via official correspondence on university letterhead.

Degree certificate vs transcript

In Nigeria, the degree certificate (scroll) is the primary credential, it shows name, degree, and date of award. The transcript is the supporting academic record. Both are required for NUC verification, NYSC call-up, and international credential evaluation. A transcript alone is not sufficient for employment in most federal public service positions.

International Credential Evaluation: WES, IQAS, and Professional Bodies

How Nigerian transcripts are evaluated for immigration, further study, and professional registration outside Nigeria.

WES evaluation of Nigerian transcripts

WES (World Education Services) evaluates Nigerian university degrees for immigration and post-secondary admission in the US and Canada. WES requires the official transcript to be sent directly from the university to WES, not through the applicant. The Nigerian university registrar seals the transcript in an official envelope and sends it by courier (DHL or NIPOST registered mail) to the WES address.

IQAS evaluation for Canadian immigration

IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service) is Alberta's credential evaluation body. Like WES, IQAS requires documents sent directly from the institution. Nigerian transcripts are evaluated against the Nigerian 5.0 CGPA scale. First Class (4.50–5.00) typically evaluates to Distinction/First Class in the Canadian equivalency report.

NYSC discharge certificate as supporting document

For Nigerian graduates who have completed the NYSC year, the NYSC discharge certificate is often requested alongside the university transcript for international credential evaluation. It demonstrates the graduate has fulfilled mandatory national service, which affects employment eligibility in Nigeria.

ICAN and professional body transcripts

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and other professional bodies (NSE, COREN, MDCN) require official transcripts from the candidate's university for professional registration. Transcripts for professional body submission must be sent directly by the university registrar, student-collected copies are not accepted.

How OpenEduCat Generates Nigerian Transcripts

The Nigeria module includes NUC-compliant transcript templates, provisional and final transcript generation, and per-semester CGPA tracking.

1

NUC 5.0 CGPA scale pre-configured

The Nigeria module uses the NUC-standard 5.0 CGPA scale with grade letters A through F and their corresponding grade points. CGPA is computed cumulatively from Semester 1 through graduation. The class of degree is determined automatically at the configured CGPA thresholds (First Class 4.50–5.00, etc.).

2

Provisional and final transcript generation

Registrars can generate provisional transcripts before convocation (showing expected class of degree based on current CGPA) and final transcripts after convocation (showing confirmed class of degree). Both formats include the required fields for NYSC call-up and NUC verification.

3

Matric number and JAMB reference on transcript

The transcript template includes matriculation number and JAMB registration number fields required by NUC and NYSC. These fields are printed in the student identification section and are cross-referenceable with the NUC accreditation database.

4

Per-semester CGPA printed throughout

Unlike some systems that only print the final CGPA, the Nigeria module prints running CGPA after every semester, enabling receiving institutions and NUC to trace the student's academic progression. This is required under NUC guidelines for complete transcript compliance.
