NUC, CGPA, and NYSC, Key Concepts

National Universities Commission (NUC)

The National Universities Commission (NUC) is the regulatory body responsible for the accreditation and quality assurance of all universities in Nigeria. The NUC standardised the 5-point CGPA grading system across all NUC-accredited universities. This standardisation means that a First Class from the University of Lagos and a First Class from Ahmadu Bello University carry the same CGPA definition: 4.50 and above on the 5-point scale.

CGPA Computation

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in Nigeria is calculated using the formula: CGPA = sum of (grade points x credit units) divided by total credit units attempted across all semesters. Each course carries a credit unit value (typically 2-4 units). Grade points are assigned: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, F = 0. A student who earns A (5 pts) in a 3-unit course and B (4 pts) in a 2-unit course has GPA for that semester = (5x3 + 4x2) / 5 = 4.6.

NYSC and Degree Classification

All Nigerian graduates from NUC-accredited universities are required to complete the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) one-year programme before being issued the NYSC discharge certificate. The class of degree (First Class, Second Class Upper, etc.) appears on the degree certificate and affects NYSC mobilisation documentation. Some federal government employment and postgraduate admissions require specific minimum classes of degree.
