Dutch University Grading System

1–10 Cijfer Scale, 5.5 Pass Mark, and ECTS Credit Accumulation

Dutch universities use the 1–10 cijfer (grade) scale, where a 6 (Voldoende — Sufficient) is the standard minimum pass. In practice the pass threshold is 5.5, which rounds up to 6. The first-year Binding Study Advice (BSA) ties progression directly to ECTS credit accumulation. OpenEduCat handles the full cijfer scale, ECTS tracking, and BSA eligibility for both WO research universities and HBO applied universities.

ECTS Credit Accumulation by Degree Level

Dutch programmes follow Bologna credit requirements. First-year BSA thresholds are evaluated against ECTS earned, not the average cijfer.

Degree LevelTotal ECTSBSA / RequirementNotes
Propedeuse (First Year)60 ECTSBSA threshold: typically 45–60 ECTS of the 60 required, institution-specificFirst-year BSA evaluation occurs at the end of year 1. Failure to meet the threshold triggers a binding negative study advice, barring re-enrolment for 3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Dutch university grading and ECTS credits.

Formally, a 6.0 is the lowest "Voldoende" (sufficient) grade on the 1–10 scale. In practice, Dutch universities apply rounding conventions: a 5.5 rounds up to a 6 and therefore counts as a pass, while a 5.4 does not. The effective minimum for a passing grade is therefore 5.5 before rounding. OpenEduCat applies the configurable rounding rule (0.5 or whole-number rounding) per institution and displays the result correctly on transcripts.
