Dutch University Grading System
1–10 Cijfer Scale, 5.5 Pass Mark, and ECTS Credit Accumulation
Dutch universities use the 1–10 cijfer (grade) scale, where a 6 (Voldoende — Sufficient) is the standard minimum pass. In practice the pass threshold is 5.5, which rounds up to 6. The first-year Binding Study Advice (BSA) ties progression directly to ECTS credit accumulation. OpenEduCat handles the full cijfer scale, ECTS tracking, and BSA eligibility for both WO research universities and HBO applied universities.
Dutch 1–10 Cijfer Grade Scale
The full grade scale used by Dutch research universities (WO) and applied universities (HBO), with ECTS equivalents for international transcript readers.
| Cijfer | Label (Dutch) | Translation | Approx. % | ECTS | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Uitstekend | Outstanding | 95–100% | A | Extremely rare in Dutch grading culture. Reserved for truly exceptional work. |
| 9 | Zeer Goed | Very Good | 85–94% | A | Strong result. Rare at Dutch research universities (WO). |
| 8 | Goed | Good | 75–84% | B | Above average — a strong academic performance in the Dutch context. |
| 7 | Ruim Voldoende | More than Sufficient | 65–74% | C | Solid pass. Many WO students graduate with 7s as their typical grade range. |
| 6 | Voldoende | Sufficient | 55–64% | D | Minimum full pass. ECTS credits are awarded. 6.0 counts; 5.5 is typically rounded up. |
| 5 | Bijna Voldoende | Almost Sufficient | 45–54% | E/FX | Borderline fail in most WO contexts. May trigger herkansing (resit) eligibility. |
| 1–4 | Onvoldoende | Insufficient | <45% | F | Fail. ECTS credits not awarded. Subject must be retaken or compensated per programme rules. |

ECTS Credit Accumulation by Degree Level
Dutch programmes follow Bologna credit requirements. First-year BSA thresholds are evaluated against ECTS earned, not the average cijfer.
| Degree Level | Total ECTS | BSA / Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propedeuse (First Year) | 60 ECTS | BSA threshold: typically 45–60 ECTS of the 60 required, institution-specific | First-year BSA evaluation occurs at the end of year 1. Failure to meet the threshold triggers a binding negative study advice, barring re-enrolment for 3 years. |
| Bachelor Main Phase (WO) | 120 ECTS | 180 ECTS total for WO bachelor's (3 years) | Credits carry over year to year. Programme-level minimum grade requirements may apply per faculty. |
| Bachelor (HBO) | 240 ECTS | 240 ECTS total for HBO bachelor's (4 years) | HBO programmes include practical (stage) components. Stage credits are counted separately. |
| Master (WO) | 60–120 ECTS | Research master's: 120 ECTS; taught master's: 60–90 ECTS | Research master's typically requires a thesis component worth 30–60 ECTS. |
