Nepali University Division and Distinction

Nepali universities award degrees with a Division classification based on the aggregate percentage: Distinction (≥80%), First Division (60–79%), Second Division (45–59%), and Third Division (32–44%). Tribhuvan University (TU) and the National Examination Board (NEB) use a CGPA of 3.6 as the Distinction equivalent. Kathmandu University (KU) applies the same GPA scale but with a stricter pass threshold. OpenEduCat automatically computes the aggregate and assigns the Division at graduation.

Nepali Division Bands

Standard division thresholds for TU, PU, and NEB. KU uses CGPA equivalents.

DivisionPercentage RangeTU CGPA EquivalentNotes
Distinction≥80%≥3.6 (A or A+)Highest academic recognition. Requires no failed subjects and consistent high performance across all courses. Printed on the degree certificate. Required for most competitive postgraduate programmes and government scholarship applications.
First Division60–79%2.8–3.5 (B to B+)Strong academic outcome. The standard target for most Bachelor and Master students. Required for many government service entrance examinations and preferred by employers for professional roles.
Second Division45–59%2.0–2.7 (C to C+)Satisfactory. A full degree is awarded. Some employers and further study programmes accept Second Division, though First Division or above is generally preferred for competitive positions.
Third Division32–44%1.6–1.9 (D to C range)Minimum passing division. The student has completed the degree requirements but with a low aggregate. Third Division is recognised as a complete degree, though opportunities for further study may be limited.
Pass (SEE, Grade 10)GPA ≥2.0 per subjectC or above in all compulsory subjectsSecondary level (SEE). Not a division — pass or fail per subject. Division classification is used at +2 (Grades 11–12) and university level. At SEE, the student receives a grade letter per subject rather than a division award.

University-Specific Distinction Requirements

How TU, PU, KU, and NEB implement the Distinction threshold in practice.

Tribhuvan University (TU)

Distinction threshold
Aggregate ≥80% or CGPA ≥3.6
First Division
Aggregate 60–79%
Notes
Most widely referenced system. Division printed on the provisional certificate and final transcript. Back exam results are included in the aggregate calculation.

Pokhara University (PU)

Distinction threshold
≥80% aggregate
First Division
60–79% aggregate
Notes
Broadly aligned with TU. Some faculties may have additional requirements for Distinction (e.g., no failed courses in any semester).

Kathmandu University (KU)

Distinction threshold
CGPA ≥3.6 (broadly equivalent to ≥80%)
First Division
CGPA 2.8–3.5
Notes
KU does not always use "Division" terminology formally. Degree certificates note CGPA and grade classification. The stricter 50% pass threshold means the effective First Division band starts higher in terms of raw performance.

NEB (+2, Grades 11–12)

Distinction threshold
Aggregate ≥80%, all subjects ≥D (32%), conduct Tannaya or above
First Division
Aggregate 60–79%
Notes
NEB uses Division classification at +2 level. Students receiving Distinction at +2 have strong university admission prospects. Division is calculated from the aggregate of all subjects including compulsory and elective.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Nepali university division and distinction classification.

At Tribhuvan University (TU), Distinction requires an aggregate percentage of 80% or above, which corresponds to a CGPA of 3.6 (grade A) or higher. Most TU faculties also require that the student has no failed subjects and no back examination results in any semester, though specific regulations vary by programme. Distinction is noted on the degree certificate and provisional certificate. Students should verify the exact clean-record requirement with their faculty academic office.
