South Korea Gradebook
Korean NEIS Gradebook — 학생부 Student Record PDF
The 학교생활기록부 (학생부, Student Record) is the central document in Korean high school grading. Maintained in the National Education Information System (NEIS), it must include stanine grades (석차등급), raw scores (원점수), cohort mean (평균), standard deviation (표준편차), credit units (이수단위), and teacher narratives for every subject. University admission offices use the complete 학생부 for 학생부종합전형 holistic reviews. This page explains what fields NEIS requires, why all three statistical values are mandatory, and how OpenEduCat generates NEIS-aligned 학생부 PDFs automatically.
학교생활기록부 Mandatory Fields
NEIS requires these fields on every 학생부. Missing any mandatory field prevents submission to university admission systems.
| Field (Korean) | Section | Required | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 석차등급 (Stanine Grade) | Academic Records | Yes | 9-level cohort-relative grade (1–9). Derived from percentile rank within the subject cohort. Primary data point used by university admission offices. |
| 원점수 (Raw Score) | Academic Records | Yes | Absolute test score before cohort conversion. Required alongside stanine so universities can evaluate performance in absolute terms across cohorts. |
| 평균 (Cohort Mean) | Academic Records | Yes | Arithmetic mean of the raw scores for all enrolled students in the same subject and semester. Provides the distributional baseline for interpreting 원점수. |
| 표준편차 (Standard Deviation) | Academic Records | Yes | Standard deviation of the cohort raw scores. Together with the mean, enables universities to reconstruct the cohort performance distribution and contextualise any individual score. |
| 이수단위 (Credit Units) | Academic Records | Yes | Subject credit weight. Accumulated totals across subjects are tracked for graduation eligibility. Each subject contributes its 이수단위 value to the student's total. |
| 과목 (Subject Name & Code) | Academic Records | Yes | Official Ministry of Education subject name and curriculum code. Must match the national curriculum registry to be accepted by university admission systems. |
| 세부능력 및 특기사항 (Subject Comments) | Teacher Notes | Yes | Teacher narrative for each subject — describing observable competencies, project work, and student characteristics. A key differentiator in 학생부종합전형 holistic review. |
| 창의적 체험활동 (Creative Activities) | Extracurricular | Yes | Record of self-directed activities, clubs, volunteering, and career exploration. Universities evaluate extracurricular depth and coherence in holistic admission review. |
| 행동특성 및 종합의견 (Behaviour & General Comments) | Homeroom Teacher | Yes | Holistic narrative from the homeroom teacher covering character, growth, and overall academic trajectory across the year. |

Why 원점수, 평균, and 표준편차 Are All Mandatory
The three-value reporting requirement exists because stanine grades alone do not tell the full story of a student's academic context.
원점수 — The Absolute Anchor
The raw score gives the university admission office a direct, absolute number. Stanine grades are cohort-relative, meaning Grade 3 at a highly competitive 과학고 (science high school) and Grade 3 at a general high school represent very different levels of absolute knowledge. The 원점수 provides an anchor that allows cross-school comparison when 평균 and 표준편차 are also available.
평균 and 표준편차 — The Distributional Context
Consider two students, both with 원점수 82 in Mathematics and both earning Grade 5. At School A, the cohort mean is 79 with a standard deviation of 8 — this student performed marginally above a tightly clustered average group. At School B, the mean is 68 with a standard deviation of 15 — this student performed nearly one standard deviation above a more dispersed cohort. The NEIS-mandated 평균 and 표준편차 fields make this distinction legible to admission officers without requiring them to request raw data from the school.
How OpenEduCat Maintains These Values Live
OpenEduCat calculates and stores 원점수, 평균, and 표준편차 at the subject-semester-cohort level as scores are entered. These values update automatically when any score in the cohort changes. The 학생부 PDF pulls the current values at the time of generation, ensuring the document always reflects the finalised grade set. Administrators can lock a grading period to prevent further changes and freeze the statistics for official submission.
How OpenEduCat Generates 학생부 PDFs
End-to-end NEIS-aligned report generation with all mandatory fields populated automatically from the gradebook.
Auto-Populated Academic Statistics
Stanine grades, 원점수, 평균, 표준편차, and 이수단위 are populated directly from the gradebook — no separate data entry required. The PDF template maps each field to the NEIS section layout automatically.
Teacher Narrative Integration
Subject teachers enter 세부능력 및 특기사항 comments directly in OpenEduCat. Homeroom teachers add the comprehensive 행동특성 및 종합의견 narrative. All teacher entries feed into the 학생부 PDF with no copy-paste workflow.
Extracurricular Activity Records
창의적 체험활동 (clubs, volunteering, career exploration) is recorded in OpenEduCat with activity type, hours, and descriptions. These records appear in the correct 학생부 section format for 학생부종합전형 holistic admission review.
Bulk Export and Student Portal Access
Administrators can generate 학생부 PDFs for individual students or in bulk for an entire cohort. Students can access their own 학생부 through the student portal for download and submission to universities.
