Indonesia University Grading

Indonesian universities follow the DIKTI 9-grade A-to-E scale (A=4.0 to E=0.0), earning credits via the SKS (Satuan Kredit Semester) system. An S1 bachelor degree requires 144–160 SKS completed at grade C or above, a minimum IPK of 2.0, and a passed Skripsi (thesis). The maximum study period is typically 14 semesters. IPS monitors semester-by-semester performance; IPK determines the Predikat Kelulusan graduation predicate. BAN-PT accreditation status appears on all official documents. OpenEduCat pre-configures the full DIKTI framework for Indonesian universities.

DIKTI 9-Grade Scale

The national DIKTI grade scale used across all Indonesian universities for S1, S2, and S3 programmes.

GradeGrade PointsScore RangeLabelNotes
A4.085–100ExcellentRequired for Cum Laude (Dengan Pujian) eligibility as part of IPK ≥ 3.51 requirement. No grade below C allowed in any course for Cum Laude.
A−3.780–84Very GoodStrong result contributing to IPK above 3.51 for Cum Laude. Most Indonesian universities recognise A− as equivalent to A− on 4.0 scale.
B+3.375–79Good PlusContributes to Sangat Memuaskan (Very Satisfactory) range when IPK averages 3.01–3.50. Acceptable for most postgraduate admissions.
B3.070–74GoodSolid result. Combined with other grades can produce IPK in Sangat Memuaskan range.
B−2.765–69Good MinusAbove minimum pass threshold of 2.0. Contributes to Memuaskan (Satisfactory) range.
C+2.360–64Satisfactory PlusPasses the subject. Does not disqualify from graduation but lowers IPK. Multiple C+ grades can bring IPK below 2.76 (Memuaskan threshold).
C2.055–59SatisfactoryMinimum pass grade. Grade of C disqualifies from Cum Laude. Student may be permitted to re-register (mengulang) to improve to B or above for key subjects.
D1.040–54PoorSubject passed at minimum level but contributes significantly to low IPK. Many programmes require re-registration for D grades in core subjects.
E0.0Below 40FailSubject failed. Student must re-register (mengulang) for the course. Counts as attempted SKS but not earned SKS. E grade disqualifies from Cum Laude.

S1 Graduation Requirements

Five conditions must be met for an Indonesian S1 (Sarjana) degree to be awarded.

1

Minimum SKS completed

144–160 SKS (varies by programme)

S1 (Sarjana / Bachelor) degrees in Indonesia require a minimum of 144 SKS (Satuan Kredit Semester). Most programmes require 144–160 SKS depending on the faculty and programme design. Professional programmes (e.g., engineering, medicine) may require up to 160 SKS. SKS are earned by completing courses at grade C or above, courses with grade E (fail) contribute to attempted but not earned SKS.

2

Minimum IPK

2.0 (minimum) for graduation

The minimum cumulative GPA (IPK) required to graduate from an S1 programme is 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. IPK below 2.0 prevents graduation. The Predikat Kelulusan (graduation predicate) requires higher IPK thresholds: Memuaskan ≥2.76, Sangat Memuaskan ≥3.01, Dengan Pujian (Cum Laude) ≥3.51.

3

Maximum study period (masa studi)

S1: 8 semesters typical, 14 semesters maximum

The normal study period for an S1 degree is 8 semesters (4 years). The maximum permitted study period (masa studi maksimum) is set by each institution, typically 14 semesters (7 years) for a 4-year programme under Permendikbud No. 3 Tahun 2020. Students who exceed the maximum period are subject to being administratively removed from the student register (dikeluarkan).

4

IPS minimum for re-registration

IPS ≥ 2.0 required at most institutions

IPS (Indeks Prestasi Semester, Semester GPA) is monitored each semester. Students with IPS below 2.0 may face restrictions: reduced maximum SKS load in the next semester (some institutions allow only 12 SKS if IPS < 2.0, vs 24 SKS for IPS ≥ 3.0), academic counselling requirements, or warning letters. Persistent low IPS may lead to academic suspension.

5

Thesis or final project (Tugas Akhir / Skripsi)

Must pass thesis defence (seminar dan sidang skripsi)

The final requirement for an S1 degree is the completion and defence of a thesis (Skripsi) or final project. The Skripsi is typically worth 4–6 SKS and is defended before a panel of examiners. The grade awarded for the Skripsi contributes to IPK. Students cannot graduate without passing the final defence.

How OpenEduCat Manages Indonesian University Grading

1

DIKTI 9-grade A-to-E scale with plus/minus variants

OpenEduCat pre-configures the Indonesian DIKTI 9-grade scale (A=4.0, A−=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B−=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, D=1.0, E=0.0) as the default grade table for Indonesian university modules. IPS (semester GPA) and IPK (cumulative GPA) are computed automatically as marks are published. The grade table can be adjusted for institutions using the simplified 5-grade scale (A/B/C/D/E) without the plus/minus variants.

2

SKS credit tracking and graduation audit

Each course is configured with its SKS value. OpenEduCat tracks earned SKS (courses passed at grade C or above) separately from attempted SKS. The graduation audit checks whether the student has met the minimum SKS requirement (configurable per programme, typically 144–160 for S1), the minimum IPK (2.0), and thesis clearance. Students and academic advisors see real-time progress toward the SKS graduation requirement in the self-service portal.

3

Maximum study period monitoring and warning system

The normal and maximum study period is configured on the programme record. OpenEduCat tracks enrolled semesters per student and flags those approaching the configured maximum. Warning notifications are sent automatically to students and academic advisors at configurable thresholds (e.g., 2 semesters before the maximum). This prevents unexpected administrative removals and allows timely intervention.

4

BAN-PT accreditation status on transcripts and certificates

BAN-PT accreditation grade (A/Unggul, B/Baik Sekali, C/Baik) is stored on the programme record in OpenEduCat. It prints on the official transcript and graduation certificate alongside the Predikat Kelulusan. When the institution renews accreditation, updating the single field updates all future documents. Historical transcripts retain the grade valid at the student's graduation date.

The Indonesian University Grading System

Indonesia has over 4,000 universities and higher education institutions (Perguruan Tinggi) regulated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) through DIKTI (Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi). All universities follow the national DIKTI grading framework, which uses a 9-point scale from A to E. The Satuan Kredit Semester (SKS) credit system determines how much academic work is required for a degree and governs the student workload per semester.

The distinction between IPS and IPK is fundamental to the Indonesian university system. IPS is the real-time semester performance indicator and determines how many SKS a student may attempt in the next semester (typically: IPS ≥ 3.0 = 24 SKS max, IPS 2.5–2.99 = 21 SKS, IPS 2.0–2.49 = 18 SKS, IPS ≤ 1.99 = 12 SKS at most institutions). IPK is the measure that matters for graduation, employment applications, and graduate programme admissions.

The SKS System and Workload Calculation

One SKS represents approximately 170 minutes of total student workload per week per semester under the Permendikbud framework. This includes scheduled class time plus structured and independent study. A 3-SKS course involves approximately 3 × 170 = 510 minutes per week across the semester. The SKS system replaced the older credit hour system and was designed to harmonise with the European ECTS framework, where 1 ECTS ≈ 1.5–2 SKS.

BAN-PT Accreditation and Grade Recognition

BAN-PT (Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi) accredits Indonesian higher education institutions and programmes on a three-point scale: A (Unggul, Excellent), B (Baik Sekali, Very Good), and C (Baik, Good). Unaccredited programmes or programmes with C accreditation may face restrictions on graduate employability in the civil service (Aparatur Sipil Negara). Some government scholarships (LPDP, Beasiswa Indonesia) and public sector employers require graduates to hold a degree from an A-accredited programme. Registrars must ensure the correct BAN-PT accreditation status is recorded and printed on all official documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Indonesian university grading, SKS credits, and graduation requirements.

Indonesian universities follow the DIKTI (Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi) 9-grade scale: A (4.0, Excellent), A− (3.7, Very Good), B+ (3.3, Good Plus), B (3.0, Good), B− (2.7, Good Minus), C+ (2.3, Satisfactory Plus), C (2.0, Satisfactory), D (1.0, Poor), and E (0.0, Fail).
