Gulf & GCC University Grading

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) universities primarily use a 4.0 GPA scale, with some Saudi and Bahraini institutions using a 5.0 scale. Academic standing bands, from Good Standing (2.0+) to Suspension (below 1.0), mirror US accreditation standards adopted by most GCC institutions. Graduation honours follow NCAAA guidelines: Distinction (3.75+), First Class (3.5+), and Second Class (3.0+). Transcripts are bilingual (Arabic/English).

Standard 4.0 GPA Grade Scale (GCC)

The most widely used grade scale across UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and most Gulf universities. Saudi and Bahrain institutions may use a 5.0 scale, verify with your institution.

GradeGrade PointsPercentageClassificationNotes
A+4.095–100%Excellent PlusTop grade. Distinction-level. Required for NCAAA Distinction honours (3.75+ GPA). Used at UAEU, AUS, AURAK, and most UAE universities.
A4.090–94%ExcellentMany UAE universities assign both A+ and A the same 4.0 grade points. Where distinguished, A+ may carry 4.0 and A 3.75, institution policy varies.
B+3.585–89%Very Good PlusStrong performance. First Class Honours range (3.5 GPA equivalent).
B3.080–84%GoodMeets Good Standing minimum with margin. Most employer screening in the Gulf uses 3.0 or 3.2 as a minimum GPA threshold.
C+2.575–79%Satisfactory PlusAbove the Good Standing threshold (2.0). Common minimum GPA for graduate programme applications at Gulf universities.
C2.070–74%SatisfactoryAt the Good Standing boundary. Students repeatedly earning C grades risk falling into academic warning territory.
D+1.565–69%Pass PlusAbove minimum pass. Course credit earned. Pulls cumulative GPA toward warning/probation territory if sustained.
D1.060–64%PassMinimum pass grade at most GCC universities. Credit is earned but the student may be placed on academic warning if cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
F0.0Below 60%FailNo credit earned. Course must be repeated. Academic standing assessed after F grades, if cumulative GPA drops below 1.0, academic suspension may apply.

Academic Standing Bands

GCC universities use four standing tiers aligned with US accreditation standards. Standing is evaluated each semester based on cumulative GPA.

01

Good Standing

Cumulative GPA 2.0 or above

Students with a GPA of 2.0 or above maintain Good Standing and have no restrictions on registration, course load, or scholarship retention. Most GCC institutions define 2.0 as the minimum for Good Standing, aligned with the US accreditation standard adopted by many Gulf universities.

02

Academic Warning

Cumulative GPA 1.5–1.99

Students in the Warning band are required to meet with an academic advisor and develop a success plan. Course load may be restricted to 12-14 credit hours per semester. Scholarship retention (where applicable) may be suspended pending GPA improvement. Warning status is not typically recorded on the external transcript.

03

Academic Probation

Cumulative GPA 1.0–1.49

Formal Probation requires reduced course load (typically maximum 9-12 credit hours), mandatory advising, and may restrict major course registration until GPA improves. Some GCC universities require Probation students to pass a learning support module before re-registering. Probation status is noted in the student record.

04

Academic Suspension

Cumulative GPA below 1.0 (or continued Probation)

Suspension bans the student from enrolling for one or more semesters. Readmission requires a formal appeal and demonstration of readiness to succeed academically. Suspension is noted on the internal academic record; policies on external transcript notation vary by institution.

NCAAA Graduation Honours

Three honours tiers are awarded at graduation based on cumulative GPA, following NCAAA (Saudi) and CAA (UAE) guidelines. Printed on degree certificates in Arabic and English.

1

Distinction (Mumtaz)

GPA 3.75–4.0 (or 4.75–5.0 on a 5-point scale)

Highest graduation honour at GCC universities. Equivalent to Summa Cum Laude in the US system. Printed on the degree certificate and transcript. Required for most competitive government scholarship extensions (e.g., Qatar Foundation, ADEC scholarships).

2

First Class (Sharaf al-Ula)

GPA 3.5–3.74 (on a 4.0 scale)

Second-highest honours. Comparable to Magna Cum Laude. Recognised across all GCC employer screening processes. Most graduate programme minimum GPA requirements (3.0) are comfortably above First Class minimum.

3

Second Class (Sharaf al-Thaniya)

GPA 3.0–3.49 (on a 4.0 scale)

Third honours tier. Comparable to Cum Laude. Indicates solid academic performance above Good Standing. Printed on the degree certificate as an honours designation at institutions that use three-tier honours.

How OpenEduCat Supports GCC University Grading

4.0/5.0 GPA scales, academic standing enforcement, NCAAA honours, and bilingual transcripts, pre-configured for Gulf and GCC university institutions.

1

4.0 and 5.0 GPA scale configuration

OpenEduCat supports both the 4.0 GPA scale used by most UAE and Gulf universities and the 5.0 scale used at some Saudi and Bahraini institutions. The grade scale (letter grade to grade point mapping) is configured at the institution level. Institutions using A+/A/B+/B/C+/C/D+/D/F bands can configure the exact grade point value per grade. Where A+ and A carry different point values, these are entered as separate grade entries.

2

Academic standing automatic evaluation

At the end of each semester, OpenEduCat evaluates each student's cumulative GPA against configured standing thresholds (Good Standing 2.0+, Warning 1.5-1.99, Probation 1.0-1.49, Suspension below 1.0). Students falling into Warning or below are flagged in the registrar dashboard with the standing tier, current GPA, and the GPA required to restore Good Standing. Course load restrictions for Probation and Suspension students are enforced during registration.

3

NCAAA honours computation at graduation

OpenEduCat computes graduation honours (Distinction 3.75+, First Class 3.5-3.74, Second Class 3.0-3.49) from the final cumulative GPA. Honours thresholds are configured per programme and applied automatically during the graduation audit. The degree certificate and transcript are generated with the appropriate honours designation in both Arabic and English.

4

Bilingual Arabic-English transcript generation

GCC university transcripts require both Arabic and English content. OpenEduCat generates bilingual transcripts with all content (student name, programme, module names, grades, and GPA) in parallel Arabic and English columns. Grade descriptions use NCAAA-standard Arabic terminology (Mumtaz, Jayyid Jiddan, Jayyid, Maqbul, Rasib). Institutional name and logo appear in both languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about GCC university GPA scales, academic standing, honours, and bilingual transcripts.

Most UAE universities (UAEU, AUS, HCT, AURAK, AUD, AUST) and many Gulf universities use a 4.0 GPA scale, aligned with the US accreditation standards adopted by most Gulf institutions (CAA in UAE, NCAAA in Saudi Arabia, BQA in Bahrain). Some Saudi and Bahraini universities use a 5.0 scale where A+ = 5.0. Kuwait University and Qatar University use 4.0 scales. Students applying to graduate programmes internationally should verify which GPA scale their institution uses for accurate conversion.
