German Numerus Clausus: Abitur Note and NC Cutoff Calculation

The Numerus Clausus (NC) is Germany's university admissions gate — it is the Abiturnote of the last applicant admitted to an oversubscribed programme. That Abiturnote (on the 1.0–4.0 scale) is derived from Punkte (0–15), which are themselves converted from the standard 1–6 Note scale. OpenEduCat automates the entire chain: Note to Punkte to Gesamtpunktzahl to Abiturnote, ready for Hochschulzulassung documents.

How the Numerus Clausus System Works

From individual subject Punkte to Abiturnote to university admission cutoff — the complete calculation chain that OpenEduCat automates.

1

Gesamtpunkte calculation

The Abitur Gesamtpunktzahl (total points) is the weighted sum of Punkte across all examination blocks: block I (four examination subjects) and block II (Grundkurs and Leistungskurs semester results). The maximum is 900 Punkte in most Bundesländer under the current KMK framework.

2

Abiturnote derivation

The Abiturnote is derived from the Gesamtpunktzahl using the KMK formula: Abiturnote = (17/3) − (Gesamtpunkte / 180). This produces a Note on the 1.0–4.0 scale. Note 1.0 requires 823–900 Gesamtpunkte; Note 4.0 is the minimum pass threshold. OpenEduCat computes this automatically.

3

NC cutoff comparison

Each university degree programme publishes an NC cutoff (Grenzwert) — the Abiturnote of the last admitted applicant in the previous year's admissions round. Applicants with an Abiturnote equal to or better than (numerically lower or equal) the NC cutoff are admitted in the main quota. Below the NC, applicants enter waiting list (Wartesemester) procedures.

4

Local NC vs. national NC (Hochschulstart)

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine use a national NC coordinated by Hochschulstart (formerly Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung). All other programmes set their own local NC. OpenEduCat records the Abiturnote for Hochschulzulassung use regardless of whether the admission is local or national.

How OpenEduCat Automates the Note–Punkte–Abiturnote Chain

From subject entry to Hochschulzulassung-ready Abiturzeugnis — without manual conversion or calculation.

1

Automatic de_punkte field

The `de_punkte` field (0–15) is computed automatically from the subject Note using the standard KMK Punkte table. Both Note and Punkte are stored and displayed on Abitur records — the registrar does not need to manually convert or cross-reference conversion tables.

2

Gesamtpunktzahl and Abiturnote computation

OpenEduCat aggregates Punkte across all Abitur examination blocks per the KMK formula and computes the final Abiturnote on the 1.0–4.0 scale. The result is available immediately when all examination grades are entered.

3

Abiturnote on Abiturzeugnis

The computed Abiturnote, Gesamtpunkte, and per-subject Punkte all appear on the Abiturzeugnis PDF generated by OpenEduCat. The document is formatted for Hochschulzulassung use across all 16 Bundesländer.

4

Dual display: Note and Punkte

University admission offices and students need both the Note descriptor (Sehr gut, Gut, etc.) and the Punkte value. OpenEduCat displays both on all Abitur records, transcripts, and the Abiturzeugnis, eliminating the need for applicants to compute their own conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the German Numerus Clausus, Abitur Note calculation, and Hochschulzulassung.

The Numerus Clausus (NC) is the admissions restriction applied to oversubscribed university degree programmes in Germany. It takes the form of a cutoff Abiturnote — the grade of the last applicant admitted in the previous admissions round. Applicants with an Abiturnote equal to or better than (numerically at or below) the NC cutoff are admitted in the main quota. The NC is not a fixed standard — it fluctuates each year depending on the number of applicants and places available.

Automate Abiturnote computation for every graduating cohort

OpenEduCat converts Notes to Punkte, computes the Gesamtpunktzahl, and generates the Abiturnote automatically — Abiturzeugnis ready for Hochschulzulassung.
