Colombian University Honours — Laureado and Meritorio

Colombian universities award academic distinction through two primary designations: Laureado — the highest honour for outstanding cumulative performance and thesis excellence — and Meritorio, recognising merit-level achievement. Both distinctions are formally recorded on the Acta de Grado and the degree certificate. This page explains the requirements for each distinction type, the issuance process, and how OpenEduCat automates honours classification for Colombian institutions.

Distinction Types and Requirements

Acta de Grado Issuance Process

How Colombian universities process and issue the Acta de Grado with honours designation.

1. Cumulative Grade Review

At the end of the final semester, the registrar computes the Promedio Acumulado across all semesters. Students whose PA meets the distinction threshold are identified automatically in the graduation clearance process.

2. Academic Record Verification

The registrar's office verifies that no failed courses (notas below 3.0) appear on the academic record and that no disciplinary sanctions have been recorded. Both conditions must be met to proceed.

3. Thesis or Project Evaluation

For Laureado distinction specifically, the graduation thesis or final project jury must award a Meritorious or equivalent grade. The thesis committee's evaluation is formally recorded before the distinction is confirmed.

4. Academic Council Approval

The list of distinction candidates is submitted to the Academic Council (Consejo Académico) for formal approval. The Council may review borderline cases or cases where additional criteria apply.

5. Acta de Grado Issuance

The Acta de Grado (official graduation act) is prepared with the honours designation. The diploma is issued bearing the Laureado or Meritorio notation where applicable. A certified copy of the Acta is provided to the graduate.
