Brazilian Em Recuperação Policy: Recovery Exam for the 5.0–6.9 Band

LDB Article 24 mandates that Brazilian schools offer a recovery examination to students whose annual média falls between 5.0 and 6.9. This Em Recuperação workflow — eligibility identification, exam creation, grade entry, and resultado recomputation — is legally required and operationally complex. OpenEduCat automates the entire process so no student is missed and no resultado is computed by hand.

Why Spreadsheets Fail the Em Recuperação Workflow

The recovery exam process touches eligibility, scheduling, grade collection, and resultado recomputation. Each step is a failure point when handled outside a purpose-built system.

Manual eligibility identification

Teachers scan grade lists by hand to find 5.0–6.9 students, a time-consuming process prone to missed cases that can result in legal exposure under LDB.

No automated exam creation

Spreadsheets cannot create a recovery exam record automatically, so exam scheduling, assignment to teachers, and grade collection are disconnected from the gradebook.

Manual resultado recomputation

After the recovery grade is entered, recalculating the final resultado for dozens or hundreds of students across subjects requires repetitive manual work and re-entry into multiple systems.

Boletim preparation delays

Because the recovery workflow happens outside the gradebook, Boletim Escolar generation must wait until someone manually reconciles recovery results and updates the spreadsheet.

Em Recuperação Policy Reference

Key rules governing the recovery exam process under LDB and standard Brazilian school practice.

Policy AspectRule / Detail
Legal basisLDB Art. 24, Inciso V — schools must offer recuperação de estudos to students who have not reached the school's promotion threshold.
Qualifying bandMédia bimestral 5.0–6.9. Students below 5.0 (Reprovado) are not eligible for recovery; students at or above 7.0 (Aprovado) do not need it.
What triggers the workflowWhen the annual média falls in 5.0–6.9 after the final bimestre, OpenEduCat automatically creates a Recuperação examination record and assigns it to the subject teacher.
Recovery exam formatA single comprehensive exam covering the full year's curriculum. Format and duration are set by the school's regimento escolar.
Resultado recomputationAfter the recovery grade is entered, the sistema recomputes the final resultado. If the recovery grade raises the effective score to ≥5.0, the student is promoted (Aprovado pós-recuperação). Below 5.0, the student is Reprovado.
Grade replacement ruleMost schools take the higher of the annual média and the recovery exam score, then apply the ≥5.0 threshold. The system is configurable to the school's regimento.
Transcript notationThe Boletim Escolar records the annual média and the recovery exam grade separately, with the final resultado (Aprovado or Reprovado) clearly marked.

How OpenEduCat Automates Em Recuperação

From annual média computation to Boletim Escolar PDF — the complete workflow without manual steps.

1

1. Annual média computed

At the close of the final bimestre, OpenEduCat computes the annual média for each student in each subject. The computation uses the configured bimestral or trimestral weighting from the school's regimento escolar.

2

2. Em Recuperação flag applied

Any student whose annual média falls in the 5.0–6.9 range is automatically flagged Em Recuperação. The flag appears in the teacher's subject dashboard and in the academic coordinator's dashboard.

3

3. Recovery examination record created

The system creates a pending Recuperação examination record for each flagged student-subject combination, assigns it to the subject teacher, and sends a notification. No manual data entry is required.

4

4. Recovery grade entered

The teacher enters the recovery exam score directly into the Recuperação record. The score is stored on the 0–10 float scale alongside the annual média.

5

5. Final resultado recomputed automatically

Once the recovery grade is saved, the sistema recomputes the final resultado. Students reaching ≥5.0 (under the school's configured rule) are marked Aprovado pós-recuperação. Those remaining below 5.0 are marked Reprovado.

6

6. Boletim updated live

The Boletim Escolar PDF is regenerated from live data. It shows the annual média, the recovery exam score, and the final resultado — ready for parent distribution and INEP filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Brazilian Em Recuperação recovery exam policy.

Students whose annual média falls between 5.0 and 6.9 (inclusive) are entitled to a recovery examination under LDB Article 24. Students below 5.0 are classified Reprovado directly and are not offered recovery. Students at or above 7.0 are Aprovado and do not need the exam. The three-tier system is legally mandated, not a school-level choice.
