Australia Supplementary Exams

Supplementary exams in Australia are offered to students who narrowly fail, typically scoring 45–49% against a 50% pass threshold. Eligibility is not automatic, and a Supp Pass is capped at the minimum pass grade regardless of the actual score achieved. Different universities use different notations: SP, SPA, or simply 50.

The Supplementary Exam Process

From narrow fail to Supp Pass: the typical five-stage process at Australian universities.

1

Fail with marginal mark

At result release

Student receives a final mark of 45–49% in a course where the pass threshold is 50%. Lower marks (below 45%) are typically not eligible for a Supp exam.

2

Faculty review of eligibility

Within 1–2 weeks of results

The faculty or course examiner reviews whether the student has met overall satisfactory performance requirements, attendance, submission of assignments, and no academic integrity flags.

3

Supp exam offered (not guaranteed)

1–2 weeks after results

Eligible students receive a notification inviting them to apply for or sit the supplementary examination. The student does not automatically receive a Supp, it must be offered by the faculty.

4

Sit supplementary exam

1–2 weeks after Supp offer

The student sits the Supp exam, which typically covers the same material as the original final examination. The format may be identical or slightly varied.

5

Grade recorded, capped at Pass

Within 1 week of Supp exam

If the student passes the Supp exam, their transcript records a Pass (typically 50% or SP grade) regardless of the actual mark achieved. If they fail, the original fail mark stands.

ANU, Melbourne, Sydney, and UQ Compared

Supplementary exam policy varies across institutions. Here is how four major Australian universities handle eligibility, grade caps, and transcript notation.

AN

Australian National University

Eligibility
45–49% final mark; satisfactory overall performance
Grade cap
Supplementary Pass recorded as 50%; actual Supp mark not disclosed to student
Transcript notation
"SP" (Supplementary Pass) replaces the original fail grade
Special consideration
Separate process; may lead to deferred exam rather than Supp

ANU uses the SP notation. Students who receive SP still count the course as passed for GPA purposes with a PS grade equivalent.

Un

University of Melbourne

Eligibility
Near-pass assessment result; based on faculty discretion
Grade cap
SPA (Supplementary Assessment) recorded, capped at minimum pass
Transcript notation
SPA notation on academic transcript
Special consideration
Special consideration may lead to a Late Supplementary Assessment

Melbourne does not publish a fixed eligibility percentage, faculty examiners decide on a course-by-course basis.

Un

University of Sydney

Eligibility
45–49% typical threshold; faculty approval required
Grade cap
Supp grade capped at 50 (Pass) on transcript
Transcript notation
Grade shown as 50 or "P" with a Supplementary Examination notation
Special consideration
Special Consideration (illness, misadventure) handled separately

USyd policy explicitly states the Supp exam result is capped at a Pass grade. Students who score higher receive only 50 recorded.

UQ

University of Queensland

Eligibility
Low Fail (2–) grade band, typically 45–49%
Grade cap
Result capped at 3 (Pass) on 7-point UQ scale even if higher scored
Transcript notation
Grade band "3" with supplementary exam notation on transcript
Special consideration
Separate Student Request for Supplementary Assessment form required

UQ applies the Low Fail (2–) grade band trigger for Supp eligibility. Students must formally apply; Supp is not automatically offered.

How OpenEduCat Manages Australian Supplementary Exams

1

Marginal fail detection and Supp eligibility flag

When a final grade is published in the 45–49% range, OpenEduCat can automatically flag the enrolment record as supplementary_eligible=True and notify the course examiner or academic board. Eligibility rules (mark range, attendance floor, assignment completion) are configurable per course or faculty.

2

Supp exam scheduling and student notification

Once a faculty approves Supp eligibility, OpenEduCat creates a separate assessment attempt linked to the original course enrolment. Automated notifications go to the student with the exam date, room, and rules. The Supp attempt is tracked independently from the original exam session.

3

Grade cap enforcement at Pass threshold

When the Supp exam result is entered, OpenEduCat applies the Pass cap automatically: if the student scores above the pass mark, the recorded effective grade is capped at Pass (or the SP/SPA notation). The actual score is retained internally for audit purposes. GPA updates using the Pass-equivalent value.

4

Transcript notation for Supp outcome

Australian Supp outcomes (SP, SPA, Supplementary Pass) are recorded using the institution-specific grade code. The original fail grade is superseded on the student-facing transcript. Internal admin views retain the full attempt history including the original fail mark and the Supp mark for examiner review and appeals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Australian supplementary exams, eligibility rules, and grade capping policy.

Supplementary exam eligibility in Australia is not automatic and is not guaranteed to every student who narrowly fails. Most universities offer Supp exams to students who score in the 45–49% range on a course with a 50% pass threshold, have submitted all major assessments, met minimum attendance requirements, and have no academic integrity issues. The faculty or course examiner makes the final eligibility decision. Students with lower scores (typically below 45%) are not eligible for a Supp exam.
