The Free Tier Trap
Almost every AI tool used in education has a free tier for individual users. Budget Category 4: Compliance and Legal Review

Data privacy review: FERPA (US), GDPR (EU), PIPEDA (Canada), and equivalent frameworks require that any system processing student data be evaluated for compliance. A legal review of a new vendor's data processing agreement, privacy policy, and terms of service costs $500–2,000 in attorney fees if done properly.
