Teacher uploads the rubric or uses a template
The teacher uploads their existing assessment rubric as a document, builds one in the rubric editor, or selects from a library of common writing rubric templates, argumentative essay, narrative writing, research report, literary analysis, lab report, and more. The rubric defines the criteria (e.g., Thesis, Evidence, Analysis, Organisation, Mechanics) and the performance descriptors for each level (Excellent, Proficient, Developing, Beginning).
Paste the student essay
The teacher pastes or uploads a student's essay. Students can also submit directly through OpenEduCat and the essay appears in the teacher's marking queue automatically. For a class of 28 students, all 28 essays can be queued simultaneously. The AI processes all essays in parallel, the teacher does not wait for each one before the next starts.
AI scores against the rubric and generates feedback
The AI evaluates the essay against each rubric criterion. It assigns a performance level for each criterion with a justification, identifies the two or three strongest elements of the essay, flags two or three specific areas for revision with paragraph-level annotations, and checks for signs of AI-generated content or plagiarism. The summary comment is written in the teacher's tone and at the appropriate grade level.
Teacher reviews, adjusts, and returns feedback
The rubric scores and feedback appear in a review interface. The teacher can adjust any criterion score, edit or add to any feedback comment, add their own annotations, and add a personal closing comment. They approve the feedback and it delivers to the student through OpenEduCat, with the rubric breakdown, paragraph annotations, and summary comment all visible in the student's assignment record.

Every piece of feedback is anchored to a specific rubric criterion. The teacher can see at a glance which criterion each comment addresses.
Paragraph-Level Annotations
Instead of only a summary comment at the end, the AI adds inline annotations at the paragraph level.
