How OpenEduCat AI Works

Three steps. One to two days. No AI engineering background required. OpenEduCat sits between your LMS data and your chosen AI model, assembling context, enforcing guardrails, and returning responses to users. You choose the model, control the data, and manage permissions from a standard admin dashboard.

3-Step Setup

From zero to a working AI integration in under two days.

1

Connect your LMS data source

Link OpenEduCat to your LMS (Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom) via LTI 1.3 or REST API. Student rosters, course syllabi, assignment schedules, and grade data sync automatically. You choose which data feeds into AI context, you can restrict it to anonymised data or course content only.

Time: 30–60 minutes for a standard LMS connection.

2

Select and configure your AI model

Choose your preferred AI provider: OpenAI GPT-4o, Anthropic Claude 3.5, Google Gemini 1.5 Pro, Meta Llama 3 (self-hosted), Mistral Large, or a custom fine-tuned model. Enter your API key, it is encrypted and stored only on your servers. For on-premise deployment, point OpenEduCat to your locally-running model endpoint.

Time: 10–15 minutes. Switch models at any time from the admin dashboard.

3

Assign AI tools to user groups

In the admin dashboard, enable or disable individual AI tools (Homework Helper, Grading Assistant, Quiz Builder, etc.) for specific user groups: teachers, students, admins, or custom roles. Set usage quotas per user per day. Configure content guardrails, which topics the AI can and cannot engage with for each group.

Time: 15–30 minutes. Changes take effect immediately.

How Data Flows Through the System

From user interaction to AI response, and back to the LMS.

1

Student or Teacher

Interacts with an AI tool in the OpenEduCat interface or LMS.

2

Context Builder

OpenEduCat assembles a context packet: user role, course data, assignment details, and conversation history. No unnecessary student PII is included.

3

AI Model API

The context packet is sent directly to your chosen AI provider using your API key. OpenEduCat is not in the data path for cloud models.

4

Response

The AI model returns a response. OpenEduCat applies guardrails (content filters, topic restrictions) before presenting the response to the user.

5

LMS / Gradebook

For tools like Grading Assistant, the processed output (score, feedback) is pushed back to the LMS gradebook via grade passback.

Platform Capabilities

The infrastructure that makes every AI tool work.

Context Builder

OpenEduCat automatically assembles the right context for each AI interaction: course syllabus, assignment details, student performance history, and conversation history. The AI always knows which course it is helping with.

Model Agnostic

Switch AI models without rebuilding integrations. OpenEduCat abstracts the AI layer, your tools, context pipeline, and data connections stay the same regardless of which model you choose.

Admin Controls

Enable or disable any AI tool for any user group. Set daily usage quotas. Configure topic guardrails. Manage API key rotation. All from a single admin dashboard, no code required.

Audit Logs

Every AI interaction is logged with user, role, tool, timestamp, and input type. Logs are queryable and exportable. Required for FERPA, GDPR, and institutional compliance workflows.

Deployment Options

Cloud SaaS for institutions that want managed infrastructure. On-premise for institutions that require data residency. Hybrid for institutions with mixed requirements across departments.

API-First

Every OpenEduCat AI feature is accessible via REST API. Build custom interfaces, integrate with existing portals, or automate administrative workflows using the same AI tools available in the UI.

Deployment Options

Cloud (SaaS)

Managed infrastructure. Automatic updates. AI calls go directly to your provider. Best for most institutions.

On-Premise

Everything runs on your servers. AI model runs locally. Zero outbound data. Best for strict data sovereignty requirements.

Hybrid

Core platform on-premise, specific AI tools using cloud models. Flexible for departments with different requirements.

Technical FAQs

Detailed answers for IT admins evaluating OpenEduCat AI.

A standard setup (LMS connection, AI model configuration, user group permissions) takes one to two days for an IT admin. The LMS integration (LTI 1.3 registration) takes 30–60 minutes. Configuring the AI model and entering your API key takes 15–30 minutes. Setting up user groups and tool permissions takes another 30–60 minutes. On-premise deployment with a self-hosted AI model adds one to three days depending on server setup.
