Exam Management Built for Boarding Schools That Run 24/7
Schedule Saturday sittings around dorm duty rotations, keep question banks in-house, and proctor on-campus exams without renting another SaaS seat. Open source, LGPLv3, self-hostable.
OpenEduCat Exam Management is an open-source module for residential schools to schedule sittings, build secure question banks, assign proctors from faculty-on-duty rosters, and publish results. It handles Saturday exam blocks, dorm study-hall conflicts, and on-campus SAT/SSAT prep tracking under one self-hosted system.

Saturday and Weekend Exam Blocks
Schedule sittings across 6-day academic weeks without breaking athletic, chapel, or weekend leave rotations. Conflict detection runs against dorm parent schedules and travel-team rosters.
In-House Question Bank
Subject heads build, tag, and version questions inside the school's own database. Nothing leaves the LAN. Item analysis flags questions where boarders consistently underperform vs day students.
Faculty-on-Duty Proctor Assignment
Pull proctors from the same duty roster that staffs study hall and dorm rounds. The system auto-skips faculty already scheduled for Saturday athletics or weekend chaperone duty.
Dorm Study-Hall Integration
When an exam is scheduled, evening study hall in affected dorms automatically gets a quiet-hours flag. Houseparents see the next morning's exam list at sign-in.
On-Campus SAT/SSAT Practice Tracking
Track practice tests proctored by your own counseling office, alongside official scores entered manually. We do not replace College Board or SSATB — we organize the prep around them.
International Student Accommodations
Time-and-a-half, separate-room, and TOEFL-substitute accommodations are stored on the student record and applied automatically when sittings are generated. Useful when 30-50% of the roll is international.
Self-Hosted on School Infrastructure
Run on the school's existing VMware, Proxmox, or AWS GovCloud tenancy. No vendor lock-in, no per-seat licensing, no surprise renewals when enrollment fluctuates.

Does this replace the SAT, SSAT, or AP program?
No. OpenEduCat does not compete with College Board, SSATB, or ETS. It organizes the internal prep program — practice tests, tutoring schedules, score tracking — around the external exams your students still register for and sit through those agencies.
Can we run it inside our existing campus network behind the firewall?
Yes. OpenEduCat is self-hosted under LGPLv3. Most boarding schools deploy on an existing VMware or Proxmox cluster in the IT closet. Database and question bank stay on-premises. No outbound dependency on a SaaS vendor.
How does it handle Saturday exams and 6-day weeks?
Exam scheduling treats Saturday as a regular academic day when configured. The conflict engine checks against athletics travel, chapel, and dorm-duty rosters before placing a sitting. NAIS and TABS member schools running 6-day weeks have been the primary design reference.
What about ADA, IEP, and international student accommodations?
Accommodation flags live on the student record — extended time, separate room, reader/scribe, or TOEFL-style language support. When an exam is generated, the system creates the appropriate sittings automatically and notifies the learning-support office and houseparent.
Who proctors? Faculty, dorm parents, or hired staff?
You decide. The system pulls from any group you mark as 'eligible proctor' — typically full-time faculty plus academic deans. It will not assign a faculty member who is already on dorm duty, athletics travel, or chapel rotation at the same time.
