Library Management System
Catalog, circulate, and reserve books across every campus branch with an open-source library platform trusted by 4,300+ schools, colleges, and universities. Ships with barcode scanning, OPAC, fines, and a student self-service portal out of the box.
A library management system is software that automates the cataloging, circulation, reservation, and fine tracking of physical and digital library materials. OpenEduCat's openeducat_library module handles barcode checkouts, overdue alerts, multi-branch catalogs, and a public OPAC search accessible to students, faculty, and librarians from any device.

Catalog & MARC Import
Import catalogs via MARC21, Dublin Core, or CSV. Manage authors, publishers, categories, and shelves across unlimited branches. Supports physical books, e-books, journals, theses, and AV material.
Barcode & RFID Circulation
Check out and return books with USB barcode scanners or RFID readers. One-click bulk issue for classroom sets. Auto-calculate loan period based on member type (student, faculty, staff).
OPAC Public Catalog
Mobile-friendly OPAC lets students search the catalog, place holds, and check due dates from the portal or any browser. Cover images, ratings, and related-title suggestions built in.
Fines & Overdue Management
Configurable per-day fine rules, grace periods, and waiver workflows. Automated email and SMS overdue reminders. Fine ledger syncs with openeducat_fees for student accounts.
Reservations & Hold Queues
Students reserve titles currently checked out and move up a hold queue automatically. Librarians see pickup lists and notify borrowers when items arrive.
Inventory & Stocktake
Annual stocktake workflow with barcode scanning, missing-item reports, and batch write-offs. Track books by accession number, condition, and replacement cost.
Multi-Branch & Inter-Library Loan
Manage multiple library branches (main, faculty, hostel) with separate catalogs and shared circulation. Transfer books between branches with full audit trail.
Reports & Analytics
Circulation trends, top borrowers, dead stock, fine collection, and category-wise usage reports. Export to PDF, Excel, or connect to BI tools.

Librarians stamp cards manually, books vanish without a trace, and parents call to ask what their child borrowed last term.
solutionPage.useCasesOutcomeLabel
Every checkout is logged via barcode, parents get SMS when a book is overdue, and annual stocktake takes 2 days instead of 2 weeks.
solutionPage.useCasesChallengeLabel
Multiple faculty libraries run on spreadsheets, research journals are lost, and students walk between buildings to find a textbook.
solutionPage.useCasesOutcomeLabel
Single OPAC searches every branch, e-journal holdings are indexed, and inter-library loan is one click. Departmental libraries merge into a unified catalog.
solutionPage.useCasesChallengeLabel
Boarders need evening library access but librarian hours are limited, and high book turnover burns out staff on weekend returns.
solutionPage.useCasesOutcomeLabel
Self-checkout kiosks with RFID run 24/7, drop-box returns are scanned in bulk each morning, and the librarian focuses on reader advisory instead of stamping cards.

Is OpenEduCat's library management system really free?
Yes. The Community Edition is LGPLv3 open-source and includes the full openeducat_library module — cataloging, circulation, OPAC, fines, and reports. You only pay for hosting or optional Enterprise support starting at $19 per user per month.
Can we import our existing library catalog?
Yes. The library module accepts MARC21 records (the standard used by most library automation vendors), Dublin Core XML, and CSV exports. Most schools migrate a 20,000-book catalog in under a day.
Does it work with barcode scanners we already own?
Any USB keyboard-emulation barcode scanner works with no driver needed. RFID readers are supported via standard SIP2 protocol, and we provide tested recipes for common school RFID kits.
How does it integrate with our student database?
Because openeducat_library shares the same database as openeducat_core, library members and students are the same record. Borrower data, class assignments, and fines flow automatically into the student ledger without sync scripts.
Can students search the catalog from home?
Yes. The OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) is a public web page students can browse from any device. They can place holds, renew loans, and see their borrowing history after logging in.
Is it GDPR and FERPA compliant?
Yes. Borrowing history is treated as education record data. Access is role-based, audit logs are immutable, and self-hosted deployments let EU institutions keep data inside their chosen region to satisfy GDPR residency. US districts get FERPA-aligned disclosure controls out of the box.
Can we run multiple library branches?
Yes. Each branch has its own catalog, stock, and opening hours, but they share a unified OPAC. Students at a hostel library can request a book from the main library, and transfers are logged end-to-end.
